Hello! What is up drama alert natio- ah fuggettaboutdit. I thought I would make a charismatic intro but then I lost interest half-way through.
Anyways, tomorrow, or in a few days, I'll be introducing a new video series on my youtube channel for starting on Auferre's design. The difference is is that this will be an interactive character design series. Below is the worksheet that I will start the video series from and you can choose to experiment as well. Just download the file and see if everything works well.
Or you can not. That's fine too. I like to make these videos as both update logs and also as relaxing working podcast that you can do your own work along too.
Oh, hey, how do you like this new direction for Auferre? I have a new plan for her now for A Long Journey. Instead of being a hero, she's an ex-hero. That's all I will reveal now.
Wow. It's been over a month since my last update. I apologize for that. Moving and dealing with a new area has been a hassle. Also, been working on a lot of things behind the scenes. Even created a new app game for google play for this series. It's called "Mahou Shoujo Anime Director VN" (long name, isn't it?) and you can check it out on the "Games" page of this site.
Anyways, for your patience, I wanted to reward you. Each episode will have it's own unique cover. Here are the ones for the first 6. Now remember, I'm remaking this entire series so I don't have any updated game files. Rest assured, A Long Journey VN is still under development. In fact, check out that game's page to see the updates I've made to it. It has a better user flow now (hopefully).
Feel free to leave a comment if you have any questions. Other than that, enjoy!
Hey guys, in taking this Hiatus, I was able to take a break and really just focus on getting better and just renewing my energy by making something else. So in these few months, I made a pocket game. It's available in the store.
This pocket game focuses on strategy to defeat your opponent in a duel. However, luck can really make your characters OP. Pangaean Tournament comes with 8 unique characters with special abilities to choose from, and item cards to help you out. Artwork is from the visual novel, A Long Journey VN.
Hello world! How ya doin'?
It’s been one year since I released the first version of episode 1 of ‘A Long Journey.’ It started out as a buggy .exe file that my Mac users couldn’t use. It morphed into my first attempt at a flash game, all the way from writing to coding to creating the artwork. Along the way I met let’s players, Elias (my composer), and wonderful people who have been talking to me and helping me with this project. I’m glad you all pushed me to keep going, and not settling for something less than professional.
The next episode (which is the full, gold-plated edition of episode 1 (the one I promised a year ago but couldn't deliver)) will be released in February. I have 40 % of the coding left, and then the cutscenes.
As I’ve released two more times, I’ve learned a lot about the game experience. Perhaps two extremely good guildlines: 1) a game is not great because of the general idea; it is great because of how well all the detail harmonize. Also, 2) never show anything you’re not showing your best work. I also learned the importance of an art style and keeping about building up, not tearing down everything each time to start over.
Since mid-December, I’ve been working 14 hour days on creating the series, especially in studying bishonen-style artwork. If you look at that redesigns section, Warrick looks much better proportioned and for the first time, I feel like I’m not settling with this character.
That reminds me, I should tell you my plan. I plan on releasing at least another 10 episodes before May arrives. These will be AIR files (Basically, they are more sophisticated SWF files), or you can play them online on the official website. With the hardest parts of the artwork for the most part settled (the main characters Warrick and Auferre), I’m thinking the process will be picking up speed. We’ll see.
////RE-DESIGNS AND CONCEPT ARTWORK
////THE HEART OF DORIAN-GRAY
The other day, someone remembered that I had once launched a Kickstarter for a game called “The Heart of Dorian-Gray.” It tickled me a bit. Working on that Kickstarter and this game slowed development down so much, so I have put it to the side. If anyone is wondering, yes, I will continue it, but only after I’ve made ‘A Long Journey’ as good as I can.
That’s all for me folks! If you have any thoughts, questions, concerns, let me know in the comments below. :D
Auferre and Warrick are no longer traveling together! – (Never thought you’d expect that happening… haha, and it’s just the second episode). Before I give you the link to play it, comment below if you think this is going to play out well. ^-^ Now here’s the link!
Man, it feels unreal actually getting to release episode 2. Most people don’t know this, but I’ve been working of this series 3 years before ever releasing a pre-alpha. The last version of episode 1 was the first time I actually created a video game that was close to what I was expecting. It was fun and a little rough getting back the comments. Luckily, none of the comments were too bad, but I felt that I let a lot of people down. I’ve been working and reworking to get the details right.
The biggest thing I learned from game development, is that anyone can make an awesome game, but can you do it in a constrained timeline, consistently? That’s what I struggle with. Creating a system or a template speeds up the progress from what you did last time, however, details matter, and details suck up time. I mean, I spent 9 hours last night on the tiniest of fixes.
But details are when emotions resonate with the player. Just a little bit of joy, or rage, or sadness can go a long way. I remember playing “Tales of Symphonia” and there was a character by the name of Genus that I never really cared for. He seemed like typical kid sidekick to me. At one point, you truly understand the stuff this young kid’s been through, and the fact that he can still be a kid, still want to be good, after all of that always stuck with me. Or even the part when… well, that’s a spoiler. >:D
And part of it was my inexperience with designing in details. I actually thought I could make two games at the same time (my other was Dorian-Gray VN), but it just ended up degrading the current project. So this is going to be the only one I work on for quite a while.
Remember, this is just an alpha version. There may be bugs, and I know that the difference in artwork between the main actors and the supporting cast.
Episode 3 is in the works already! If you’ve been following the blog posts, you have an idea of what to expect. Actually, I have episode 4 in cue.
My composer Elias Luukanen has created a beautiful score of songs to be used in the series, and two brand new ones will be coming out with the next episode. Be sure to follow that guy as he is amazing at what he does! A special shout out to my friends the White Bowser (of youtube) and Wendellburke5 (of gamejolt) for giving such strong support to the series. Thanks guys! :D
Happy Halloween folks!
“If you get lost, remember, there is no such thing. Instead of having taken the shortest route, you took the one that could take you light-years to reach to the end. But you will get there.”
So this alpha is very much unfinished. I'm working on finishing the other half of the story (most of it is reading my script and deciding what to cut out anyways).
Check out the visual novel page if you're interested.
